Picking DIY Projects that are Safe for Mother Earth

Most of us are concerned these days when we use chemicals.  We wonder if they’re really safe for our homes and those who live in it.  We also might wonder how these projects can damage our precious Earth.  I want to talk to you about a few great Green DIY projects that will have you feeling good about your home.

Wallpaper Removal

Wallpaper is a popular wall treatment for some, but for others, it’s the tackiest thing on the planet.  When we moved into our home, every wall was plastered with 1980’s style wallpaper that didn’t want to come down.  Sure, we could have ran to the hardware store and picked up a gallon of wallpaper stripper to do the trick, but we decided to go a more natural route and use what we had around the house.  These ideas are great, especially if you have sensitive skin that might be bothered by spraying wet chemicals onto your walls.

Start by taking an empty spray bottle and filling it with hot water.  Spray it on the walls and see how getting it really wet works.  Sometimes, all the wallpaper needs is a little moisture.  If that doesn’t work, just put a few drops of liquid fabric softener in with the hot water.  It should loosen up the paper and make it peel off in a snap…but remember: the wetter the better!  Soak those walls!  Your room will also have a light, pleasant scent when you’re finished.

Household Cleaners

Have you ever looked at a bottle of your counter cleaner?  There are some serious chemicals in those that can make you sick should you fail to rinse them off surfaces properly.  Did you know you can use water and lemon juice mixed together?  Hot water and lemon together can leave your counters clean and fresh smelling, plus lemon juice has the power to kill bacteria.  Did you know that vinegar can remove lime deposits?  Now you don’t have to use harsh chemicals to treat your sink and bathtub when they get a chemical build up.

If you have carpet, odds are you have carpet stains.  Did you know that you can use a cornstarch solution to remove the stains?  This is a low-odor solution, as you may already know how powerful some carpet stain removers can smell.  Also, don’t buy that over-scented rug deodorizing powder.  Just sprinkle some baking soda on your carpet and vacuum it up.  If it can work in your fridge to remove odor, it can work on your carpets!
